Well it is almost time again for this great event. Hopefully you
have made your Grand Sierra Resort reservations, as I understand
the accommodations are filling up fast. By all indications
everyone really enjoyed their stay last year. The hotel just
completed additional facilities and improvements in the main
lobby for everyone to enjoy. The hotels family fun center was a
huge highlight last year and I am sure the juniors are excited
about spending more time there again.
The first event will be Friday evening. The juniors will once
again have their annual fun night. Carla Malson is in charge of
the evening. Enough can’t be said for what Carla has done over
the countless years for her dedicated work and support of all
juniors.
The Reno Livestock Event Center
is the place to be at 9:00 am Saturday. This is the junior show
day and this event is always extremely competitive.
A number of these animals have
already won at various shows which adds to the intensity of the
competition. After the state group classes, is the junior
showmanship competition. You will have the opportunity to see
some of the best showmen in the country compete in the various
age groups.
Jeannie Yardley is this years
judge for the junior show. Jeannie grew up on a very successful
family operation in Beaver, UT. She has a lifetime hands on
understanding of the cattle and ranching business. She has been
and continues to be a major contributor to the ranches superior
purebred cattle and successful annual sales. Jeannie has a
refreshing personality, is enthusiastic about the cattle
business and really enjoys working with the juniors at shows.
The 2010 WSSA queen will receive
her crown before the owned Champion Heifer is selected. These
young ladies are great assets at Angus functions and activities.
The National Junior Associations
“Raising the Bar Leadership Conference,” marks the end of the
junior activities day at the Grand Sierra Resort.
Sunday is the 58th WNAF Super
ROV Female Show in the Event Center, where some of the greatest
young Angus females of the breed will be competing.
Shane Lindsey from Prairie City,
IA is the open show judge. He comes to Reno with outstanding
recommendations. Shane is a highly respected cattleman and
reliable judge of beef cattle. His lifetime experiences include
successfully breeding, fitting and showing purebred cattle at
the national level.
Prior to the selection of the
Grand Champion female, the WNAF dedication in honor of Mel
Hansen takes place. A wonderful article on Mel was published in
the January issue of Angus The Magazine. Mel has been and
continues to be a true ambassador for the Angus breed and the
WNAF. He is the one person you can always depend on to help out
during the futurity. Mel was a great asset during his numerous
years as a board member, and continued to contribute innovative
ideas and foresight. Regardless of various situations and their
circumstances Mel always comes with a positive attitude and
infectious smile.
Following the female show, the
Show Girl Review sale cattle can be viewed in the show ring
area. The sale managers will be Jake Parnell and John Dickinson
again this year. As always the sale offers females of show
quality, donor prospects, future foundation females, embryos,
flushes, and heifer calf pregnancies. Historically this sale
represents some of the very best quality and genetics in the
Angus breed.
Sunday evening at 7:00 pm Cara
Ayres and Beth Schreiber will take the stage performing the
musical they have written “Suds N Suds.” Last years performance
was a tremendous success and this entertainment promises to be
an evening to remember. Tickets can be purchased early for
$25.00 to this annual futurity fundraiser by calling
(916)-362-2697.
Monday, the 58th WNAF Super ROV
Show Continues. Bulls, cow-calves, and groups will be showing.
This is a great opportunity to view these superior herd bull
prospects.
The Big Draw Down will be
announced during show breaks. I urge you to purchase tickets, as
the income helps cover operating expenses.
Hoping you all have a safe trip
to Reno and looking forward to seeing you there.
