Greetings!

As we enter the new year and spring bull sales start in the West with our equivalent of Denver, being Red Bluff Bull, Gelding and Dog Sales events. In hope of a positive market as cattle numbers are down significantly from past years. Time set aside for proper planning for the 2010 spring breeding season can be quite rewarding. Begin with adequate mineral. Provide a mineral supplement designed for your area. Protein in quality hay or supplement to maintain sufficient body condition. A vaccine program starting as heifers with booster after initial vaccination. Pre – breeding vaccination given in advance, following label instructions to eliminate early embryonic death.

Breeding protocols; for heat sync. A common practice in AI allows for breeding on time or visual heat. Always consider percentage of conception with your choice. Semen quality is not always dependent on your success or failure as many other factors are possible.

Heat detection is key for success. Semen quality to be maintained with proper handling and storage. (It cost no more to maintain a tank ½ to full of nitrogen.) Use of outer thaw thermos is best to keep constant water temp. (Battery or electric.) Always avoid exposure of semen to direct sunlight. If cold conditions exist pre-heat AI gun to eliminate shock. If there are questions on semen quality, contact supplier for reference on testing. Semen extender type will dictate testing procedure. Always contact semen supplier for recommendations.

Good luck with your breeding program,
