Western National Angus Futurity
& Western Regional Junior Show
April 25, 26 & 27th
Hopefully you have made plans to attend this tremendous, three
day event. After several years at John Ascuaga’s Nugget, WNAF
has a new location. After contacting several hotels in Reno, Jim
Danekas negotiated a five year agreement with Grand Sierra
Resort. The result of this agreement, allows us a positive
financial situation so we can continue to host the WNAF with
confidence. Thank you, Jim, for your dedicated efforts in making
this transaction a reality.
By all indications the Grand Sierra is really looking forward to
having Angus folks as their guests. They have an excellent
reputation for their hospitality and service. Futurity guests
will check in at the summit desk next to the elevators, and can
go directly to their rooms. For parking your vehicles, there
will be a roped off reserved area. For futurity guests, a
special highlight (and a wonderful treat for the juniors) is the
family fun center. The resort facilities include bowling alleys,
video games, miniature golf, NASCAR racing, bumper cars, pool
tables, bungee jumping and more.
Carla Malson, once again is in
charge of the junior fun night. This event will begin Friday
evening, and the juniors always have a great time at this fun
filled get together. It is also a great time and place to renew
acquaintances, and meet new friends.
Saturday is “Show Day” for the
juniors at the Reno livestock event center. The competition and
depth of quality will certainly be evident in every class.
Traditionaly, several of these same animals will go on and win
championships at Major and National shows across the country.
The junior showmanship competition follows the state group
class. And once again, these juniors are very talented and
competitive. Showmanship is always a popular event to watch, and
remember always to be supportive of the boys and girls, for they
are the future of the Angus business.
The junior activities day ends at the Grand Sierra Resort with
the National Junior Angus Association “Raising the Bar
Leadership Conference.”
The 2009 WSSA queen will recieve her crown before the owned
Champion Heifer is selected. These talented and attractive young
ladies are great ambassadors for the Angus breed.
Kyle Colyer of Bruneau, Idaho is this year’s junior judge. He
grew up in the purebred Hereford business, and has fed, fitted,
and shown numerous National Champions. Kyle continues to be
supportive with youth of all ages. He is helpful, courteous and
consistent with his judgments.
Sunday is the 57th WNAF Super ROV Female Show. On this day you
will have the opportunity to see some of the greatest, young
Angus females in the breed.
Jeff Dameron, of Lexington,
Illinois will serve as the open show judge. Jeff and his family
have a strong tradition and are highly respected breeders of
superior Angus, and annually have a very successful production
sale. He is a highly qualified and respected judge and has
exhibited several champions in major and national shows.
Prior to the selection of the Grand
Champion Female, the WNAF dedication in honor of Larry Kirk will
take place. An article writen by Larry is in the January issue
of Angus The Magazine. His writings give us a unique insight, as
he shares his life’s work, interests and accomplishments. After
all these years of dedicated service, Larry continued to be a
consummate professional in his endeavors. The show and various
events won’t quite be the same without Larry Kirk.
After the female show you can view
the Show Girl Review sale cattle in the show ring area. John
Dickinson and Jake Parnell are our sales managers again this
year. In the sale offering will be females of show quality,
donor prospects, future foundation females, embryos, flushes and
also featuring heifer calf pregnancies. This sale represents
some of the very best quality and genetics the Angus breed has
to offer. For Sunday
evening fun and entertainment at the Grand Sierra, Sherry
Danekas is coordinating a WNAF fundraising song and dance show,
“Honkey Tonk Laundry”. The entainment features Cara Ayres and
Beth Schreiber. These young ladies are extremely talented and
you won’t want to miss the opportunity to see the show. They
have been getting great reviews. Most of you will remember Cara
from growing up in Oregon breeding and showing her Angus cattle,
and recently she judged the Reno Western Regional Junior Show.
(More information is available in the February issue of Angus
The Magazine.) Monday, the
57th WNAF Super ROV Show continues. Bulls, cow-calves and groups
will be showing. This is a great opportunity to view these
superior herd bull prospects.
The big Draw Down will be announced during show breaks. I urge
you to purchase tickets, as this income helps cover operating
expenses. I would like to
recognize and congratulate Darrell Silveira on his recent
acceptance to serve on the American Angus Assocation board of
directors. Darrell is universally recognized and respected for
his vast knowledge of the Angus breed. He has always traveled
extensively to sales, shows and Angus functions, and is always
well informed in the Angus circles. If you are interested in
current circumstances at the national level, take the
opportunity to visit with Darrell while in Reno.
See you in Reno,
Dick Hubman
