Keep life in Perspective

Over the years I have found that it is important to keep everything in perspective. We should take a little time to reflect on the past year even if we are busy either observe or participate in the activities at the National Western Stock Show or more simply “Denver”. There have been several recent occurrences that have caused us to consider how we should look at life and our accomplishments.

First we had the opportunity to go on a Tanzania, Africa safari with two other couples. There were numerous species of animals to be seen and appreciated. We visited some tribes of people and have a better understanding of their life style. It makes one appreciate our government and its ability to provide services to residents. It may not be perfect but we now understand how much different it could be. At least the roads within our towns are paved and do not need major surface repair.

The Maasai people are still living the way they did hundreds of years ago. By our standards it would be considered extreme poverty but the people we saw are basically happy and the children friendly. Makes you question why we push so hard to make a living. An uncle who was quite successful in the cattle business once told me “It’s a lot more fun making it than having it”. I am sure it is the challenge of trying your best that makes the cattle business so emotionally rewarding.

We have received word about the death of Mac Olsen. We first met Mac & Wendy when he was herdsman for Duncan’s in Idaho. Really nice young couple who seemed to enjoy what they were doing. We have crossed Mac and Wendy’s path several times over the years and have enjoyed watching their daughter grow and become quite good at exhibiting cattle.

There was another sadness that took place when a friend recently lost her first grandchild at birth. Being a grand parent who loves his grandchildren I can understand the loss. It is important to appreciate your children and grandchildren now as life can throw unexpected curves at you. Life altering occurrences really do make one stop and think. It is important to enjoy life as you go because we don’t always get what we want.

May the recent holiday spirit remain with you through out the New Year. I am sure that those who attend the Denver show will enjoy the activities. Win or loose life goes on and so does optimism and satisfaction. Hope to see you at Reno.
