The Western National Angus Futurity
committee dedicates the 2008 Western National Angus Futurity,
April 26-28 to Hal and Lois Schudel of Holiday Ranch, Terrebonne,
OR. The Schudels developed their Angus program to include 325
mother cows along with an extensive embryo transfer program.
Holiday Ranch rapidly became one of the elite programs in the
West. In June 2007 the complete operation including real estate,
cattle and equipment was sold to Virgil Lovell of Ankony Angus,
Clarksburg, GA.
Hal and Lois have been active
supporters of the Western National Angus Futurity through program
advertising, drawn down tickets, trophy sponsorship, sale buyers
and consignors along with exhibiting champions at numerous
futurities. Hal and Lois were always there when the futurity
needed help.
Helping and support have come
natural for Hal and Lois. Whether it was a junior activity,
association functions, college donations, Angus foundation support
or whatever the need may be, Hal and Lois were there.
Hal, who was born and raised in
Nebraska, received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science
degrees from the University of Nebraska in agronomy. After serving
his country in World War II as a B-24 pilot, Hal and family moved
to Oregon where he had a fellowship at Oregon State University.
Hal always enjoyed teaching students and many of them he has
remained in contact with over the years. In the late fifties Hal,
with his Doctorate degree in hand, along with his partner Paul
Goodmanson, began Holiday Tree Farm which pioneered the
“plantation” tree industry that grew into the largest of its kind
in the world. In the 70’s, Hal, along with his three sons, David,
Steven and John bought out Hal’s partner. Holiday Tree Farm grew
to 6,500 acres of trees in four counties in Oregon and
merchandised over 1,000,000 trees per year.
In 1992, Hal retired from the tree
business, and he and Lois purchased Holiday Ranch in Terrebonne
which grew to be one of the elite and well respected Angus
programs in the West. Annual bull and female sales began in the
2000’s. Over the years, Hal and Lois hosted numerous field days,
open houses, judging team workouts, cattleman’s get togethers and
numerous other community functions at Holiday Ranch. Whenever
junior organizations or cattle associations needed assistance, Hal
and Lois were always willing to host or assist. Their love and
admiration of the Angus breed and their Angus friends have been
evident for years. For their many years of dedication to the
Western National Angus Futurity, the Western States Angus
Association, the Angus breed and agriculture, the 2008 Western
National Angus Futurity is dedicated to loyal Angus enthusiasts
and friends, Hal and Lois Schudel of Holiday Ranch at Terrebonne.
The Schudels will be honored prior
to the selection of the 2008 Grand Champion Female on April 27 in
Reno, NV.
