Jim Heckendorf, age 41,
of Middlefield Farms, Fort Collins, CO, passed away Saturday,
January 13, 2007, at home surrounded by his family.
Jim was born on October
26, 1965 in Denver to Francis “Hecky” Heckendorf Jr, and Darlene
Atchison. Jim grew up in Castle Rock. He graduated from Douglas
County High School in 1984. In high school, Jim was an all-state
athlete in three sports: football, baseball, and was a wrestling
champion. After graduation, Jim attended Oxnard Junior College in
California where he played baseball. He transferred to CSU for the
next three years, majoring in animal science, and also playing
baseball. Jim then spent his life as a rancher. He moved to Fort
Collins, where he managed and owned a herd of registered Angus
cattle.
In 1986, while in
college, he met Shelley, his future wife. They married in Grand
Lake in 1993.
Jim was a member of many livestock organizations and a 4-H leader
for 12 years.
He was an avid
fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman. He made sure that his children
knew his appreciation for the outdoors. Jim was also a good cook.
He was an artist and illustrator for short stories. Jim was well
loved by all.
He is survived by
his wife, Shelley Heckendorf of Fort Collins; his children, Holly
Mae and Walker James of Fort Collins; his mother, Darlene Atchison
of Fort Collins; his father, Hecky Heckendorf of Fort Collins; a
grandmother, Theda Atchison of Fort Collins; a brother, Francis
“Heckler” Heckendorf; two sisters, Michele (Donnie) Laubacher and
Grace (Ken) Huskey; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and
nephews; and many beloved animals and friends.
A memorial service
was held at the River of Life Fellowship, Wellington, Co.
