Greetings from Oregon!

Western States Angus Association is a 501 © (3) Non Profit Corporation. As stated in the articles of incorporation the purposes for which the corporation is organized are to 1) improve the breed of Aberdeen Angus Cattle; 2) promote the wider distribution of such cattle; 3) encourage and extend the influence of Aberdeen Angus Cattle; 4) perform such other acts to best promote the interest of Aberdeen Cattle; 5) obtain and disburse monies to achieve the above goals. Many of the state associations have the same purposes.

It is not a very large percentage of breeders that belong to state and regional Associations. Those who don’t join one of these groups are quite simply not ‘carrying their own water’. They are letting you invest your time and your money for their benefit. I encourage you to encourage your non-member friends to step up, join and actively participate in your associations.

I have noticed over the past few years that some of the regional and state sponsored sales have struggled not only to get consignments but also to get buyer participation. If these sales go by the wayside so will the associations putting them on and in the long run the Breed and all of us will suffer the consequences. My fear is that without a place for the smaller breeder or new breeders to sell their cattle, they may also go by the wayside. How many of these breeders are your customers? Even more important, than the sales and shows our organization’s sponsor, are the promotions and sponsorship for junior events and the influences these junior activities have on our youth. They are our future and we need to make sure we are planning and securing that future.

On the other hand, thanks are in order for every breeder who actively participates in association activities. The organization is for livestock producers, of livestock producers and by livestock producers. The success of this association over the years has been built on active participation and commitment of the members, directors and officers and the future will be no different.
Thanks and Good luck on this year’s calf crop.
